AirPods Get Custom EQ, Redesigned Settings Menu, and GymKit Heart Rate in iOS 27 Beta

Apple's iOS 27 developer beta includes the most significant AirPods software update in years, bringing custom EQ, a completely redesigned settings interface, and health features that further differentiate the AirPods Pro 3 from competitors.

Custom EQ — Finally

For the first time, AirPods owners can adjust sound with a three-band equalizer — low, mid, and high frequencies — with an interactive real-time preview. The feature is available on AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2 (any model with an H2 chip or newer). Access it via Settings > [AirPods Name] > Audio & Routing > Equalizer > Custom.

While Sony and Samsung have offered multi-band EQ for years, Apple's implementation includes real-time audio previews that let you hear changes before applying them — a polish touch typical of Apple's approach.

Redesigned Settings Menu

The AirPods settings page has been completely reorganized from a flat list into categorized sections: Audio & Routing, Hearing Health, Controls & Gestures, Live Translation, Accessibility, Battery, Find My, and Privacy. Transparency, Noise Cancellation, and Adaptive mode toggles remain at the top with a new integrated volume slider.

GymKit Heart Rate Syncing

AirPods Pro 3 can now sync heart rate data collected from their built-in sensor to GymKit-compatible gym equipment — treadmills, indoor bikes, ellipticals — via the iPhone Fitness app. This was previewed at WWDC and is now functional in the beta.

When Will These Features Ship?
