Garmin Patent Reveals AMOLED + Solar Hybrid Display for Fenix 9: The Trade-Off May Finally Be Over
A newly uncovered Garmin patent describes layering perovskite solar cells over AMOLED displays — potentially eliminating the choice between vibrant screens and solar battery life in the upcoming Fenix 9.

The fitness enthusiast's dream — Garmin's deep sports tracking with a vibrant AMOLED display and up to 10 days of battery life.
Starting At
$399
Garmin may have cracked the smartwatch industry's biggest trade-off. A newly surfaced patent describes a method for combining AMOLED displays with solar charging — something Garmin has repeatedly said wasn't feasible without compromising screen quality or adding prohibitive cost.
How It Works
The patent proposes layering microscopic pillars and hydrophobic channels around the display to let a liquid perovskite solar material flow through without obscuring the screen. Perovskite is particularly efficient in low light and cloudy conditions. The concept would let Garmin keep AMOLED's deep blacks and vibrant colors while quietly harvesting light to extend battery life.
Why It Matters
Today, Garmin buyers must choose between the Fenix 8 AMOLED (vibrant screen, shorter battery) or Fenix 8 Solar/MIP (longer battery, duller display). If this patent reaches production in the Fenix 9, that choice disappears. You'd get both — and Garmin estimates the combination could deliver 30+ days of battery life with an always-on AMOLED display.
Timeline
No FCC filing tied to the Fenix 9 has appeared yet, but Garmin CEO Cliff Pemble told analysts to expect "a very active year plan for outdoor" in H2 2026. A Fenix 9 announcement in August to October 2026 is the most likely window, with pricing expected to match the Fenix 8 AMOLED's $999 starting point.
What This Means for Buyers
If you're eyeing the Garmin Venu 4 at $549, it remains an excellent buy today. The Fenix 9 will be priced significantly higher ($999+). For outdoor athletes who want the best GPS watch and can wait 4–6 months, the Fenix 9 could be worth it. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 at $609 is the current leader for iPhone users.
