Samsung's preemptive legal strike against Oura has failed. Federal judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín dismissed Samsung's declaratory judgment action — the lawsuit Samsung filed last summer arguing that Oura's "pattern of indiscriminate assertion of patent infringement" posed an imminent risk to Samsung and the Galaxy Ring.

What Happened

Samsung filed a preemptive suit seeking a court ruling that the Galaxy Ring does not infringe Oura's patents. The judge found that Oura had not specifically threatened Samsung at the time the suit was filed, and dismissed the case without prejudice. Samsung has until late April to file an amended complaint, but legal analysts say the window is narrow.

The Bigger Picture

Oura's ITC complaint against Samsung, Reebok, Zepp Health (Amazfit), and Nexxbase is still active. Nexxbase has already submitted a Consent Order voluntarily withdrawing from the U.S. market. If the ITC rules in Oura's favor, the Galaxy Ring could face a U.S. import ban — and the Galaxy Ring 2 launch would be delayed indefinitely.

What This Means for Buyers

If you're considering a smart ring, the Oura Ring Gen 4 is the safest bet — its market position is only getting stronger. The Samsung Galaxy Ring is still available at current prices, but buying one now carries a risk that future software updates or accessories could be affected. The RingConn Gen 2 at $299 remains an excellent subscription-free alternative. Read our full buying guide.
