AI Glasses Sales Surge 263% in 2026: Best Smart Glasses to Buy Before Apple Enters
The numbers are staggering. AI glasses shipments surged 263% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. Smart glasses are now the fastest-growing consumer electronics category on the planet — growing faster than smartphones ever did at their peak. And with Apple still 15+ months away from launching its own pair, the question for buyers is clear: should you jump in now, or wait?
Market Growth
263% YoY in H1 2026. Display-less models account for 96% of shipments. North America leads at 50%.
Market Leader
Meta holds 94% of display-less AI glasses. Ray-Ban Meta starts at $299. Gen 3 expected today at Meta Connect.
Apple's Timeline
Late 2027 for first smart glasses. Audio + camera + Siri focus. Advanced AR not until 2029.
What Does 263% Growth Actually Mean?
To put this in perspective: the smartphone market grew 65% in its best year (2010). Smart glasses are growing at four times that rate. Counterpoint's data shows display-less AI glasses — meaning products without AR overlays, focused on audio, camera, and AI features — account for 96% of all shipments. These are the glasses people actually want to wear.
The growth is being driven by several factors: falling prices on mainstream models like the Ray-Ban Meta, improving AI capabilities (live translation, real-time visual AI), wider retail availability, and more frame styles that look like normal glasses rather than tech prototypes.
Who's Winning the Smart Glasses Race?
Meta isn't just winning — it's dominating. With 94% of global display-less AI glasses shipments, Meta's Ray-Ban partnership has created a near-monopoly. Xiaomi and Alibaba each hold about 1%, with the remaining 4% split among dozens of smaller brands.
This dominance comes from three advantages competitors haven't matched:
- The Ray-Ban brand: People will wear Ray-Bans. They won't wear most tech-looking alternatives
- Meta AI integration: Real-time visual identification, live translation, and conversational AI that actually works
- Retail distribution: Available at Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, and major retailers — not just tech stores
Today's Meta Connect keynoteis expected to announce Ray-Ban Gen 3 (codenames "Aperol" and "Bellini"), which could extend Meta's lead even further with longer AI session times and improved cameras.
Should You Buy Smart Glasses Now or Wait for Apple?
Apple is targeting late 2027for its first smart glasses. That's at least 15 months away. Here's why waiting is a bad trade for most buyers:
- 15 months of utility lost: If smart glasses would improve your daily life (hands-free calls, music, AI assistance, photo capture), you're giving up over a year of use
- Apple v1 vs Meta v3: Apple's first smart glasses will be a first-generation product. Meta will be on its third generation by then, with years of software refinement
- Apple's initial focus is limited: Bloomberg reports Apple's first model will omit AR displays, focusing on audio, cameras, and Siri — the same formula Meta has already perfected
- Prices may rise: Counterpoint flagged rising semiconductor costs as a market challenge. Today's $299 entry point may not last
The exception:If you're deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem and want seamless integration with iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, waiting for Apple's entry makes sense. Apple's tight hardware-software integration could deliver a better experience for iPhone users than Meta's cross-platform approach.
Best Smart Glasses to Buy Right Now (September 2026)
Based on the current market landscape and what's coming at Meta Connect today, here are our top picks:
Best Overall: Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer ($299–$459)
The market leader for a reason. The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer offers the best balance of style, features, and AI capability. Start with the $299 model if you want audio and AI; upgrade to the camera version ($379+) if you want photo and video capture.
Wait consideration: Meta Connect today may announce Gen 3. If price is flexible, wait 24 hours for keynote details. Current models may see price drops.
Best for Privacy: Meta Luna (Expected Today)
If wearable cameras concern you — and Counterpoint says they concern many potential buyers — the camera-free Meta Lunaglasses could be announced at today's keynote. Expected in Clubmaster and Burbank frame styles with six microphones and Meta AI, Luna removes the social friction that cameras create.
Best for AR Display: XREAL One Pro ($599)
The 4% of shipments that aren't display-less include AR glasses like the XREAL One Pro. If you want a virtual screen for productivity or entertainment, this is the strongest option. Note: this is a different use case from the AI glasses driving the 263% growth.
What About Samsung, Google, and Others?
Samsung's Galaxy Glasses have been confirmed with four frame designsbut have no ship date. Google's Android XR platform is being developed with partners like Samsung, but consumer products aren't expected until 2027. The competitive landscape is heating up, but for buyers in September 2026, Meta remains the only mature option.
