Apple Reportedly Testing Four Vision Pro Successor Prototypes Including External Compute Puck Design

Apple hasn't given up on mixed-reality headsets. A September 27 report from 9to5Mac reveals Apple is actively working on a new project codenamed N224, with about four prototypes under testing — a sign that development is further along than many expected after the company shelved the Vision Air.

Four Prototypes in Testing

• External compute puck: One prototype uses a tethered external processing unit, similar to Meta's VR Glasses approach, dramatically reducing on-face weight
• Budget chip variant: Another uses a less powerful processor to hit a lower price point
• Two additional designs: Details are scarce, but the existence of four prototypes suggests Apple is exploring multiple form factors simultaneously

Timeline and Context

N224 is a separate project from the previously canceled N100 (Vision Air). Bloomberg reports it could arrive between late 2028 and early 2029. In the meantime, Apple is also developing smart glasses for 2027.
