Gemini Wear OS Overlay Rolls Out to Pixel Watch — Watch Face Stays Visible at Last

Google is rolling out a Gemini overlay update to existing Pixel Watch models that solves one of the smartwatch AI experience{"'"}s biggest annoyances: the watch face now stays visible during Gemini interactions, instead of being replaced by a full-screen AI interface.

What Changed

Previously, launching Gemini on the Pixel Watch took over the entire display, hiding your watch face, complications, and at-a-glance information. The new overlay approach keeps the watch face visible underneath while Gemini responses appear as a translucent card that slides up from the bottom. You can glance at the time and your complications while getting AI answers.

Why It Matters for Pixel Watch 5

This update is a preview of the deeper Gemini Intelligence integration coming with the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12. The Pixel Watch 5{"'"}s 3GB RAM and 64GB storage will enable more Gemini features to run on-device, including building shopping lists from photos, summarizing notifications, and creating custom watch-face widgets from voice commands.

Which Watches Get It

The overlay update is rolling out to Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4 models running the latest Wear OS build. Pixel Watch 2 and original Pixel Watch are not supported due to hardware limitations. The rollout is gradual — check for updates in the Play Store on your watch.
