Meta Closes Final Smart Glasses Privacy Loophole: Camera Now Stops If Privacy LED Is Covered During Recording

Meta is rolling out a new firmware update that closes the last major privacy loophole on its smart glasses. The update stops the camera from recording if the privacy LED is covered or obscured during an active recording session, according to Meta VP of AR Alex Himel.

What Changed

The earlier mandatory v26 update (July 2026) added hardware-level tamper detection — physically removing or destroying the LED circuit permanently disabled the camera. But a loophole remained: users could start a recording with the LED visibly illuminated, then cover the light with tape or a finger once capture was underway. The new update adds real-time monitoring that detects when the LED is obscured and automatically halts the camera.

Broader Crackdown

Meta has also taken enforcement action beyond firmware:

• Several businesses offering LED-removal services (previously charging ~$60 to desolder the component) have shut down
• Instagram has removed accounts linked to LED-tampering services
• Meta removed ads, posts, and Marketplace listings promoting tampering tools
