Apple officially launched the Apple Watch Series 12 at yesterday's Surprise and Shine event, confirming a $399 starting price — the same as the outgoing Series 11. Pre-orders are open now, with in-store availability on September 18.

Health Sensing System: The Headline Feature

The biggest hardware change is what Apple calls the Health Sensing System: a completely redesigned optical and electrical sensor array with larger green LEDs. The upgraded sensors record heart rate every five seconds in the background — a significant improvement over the Series 11's cadence — and measure Heart Rate Variability (HRV) up to 24 times more frequently. This data feeds into the new Readiness score, a daily recovery metric built into watchOS 27 that directly competes with what Oura and Whoop have offered for years.

Design and Display

The Series 12 retains the 42mm and 46mm case sizes from Series 11 but adds two standout options: ceramic cases in Pearl White and Night Blue — the first ceramic Apple Watch since Series 3 in 2017. The display gets Ceramic Shield 2 coating, which Apple says is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on Series 11.

Performance and Storage

Under the hood, the Series 12 features a new S12 chip (codenamed T8320), ending three generations on S10-era silicon. Storage doubles to 128GB, addressing a long-standing complaint for users who download podcasts and workout apps directly to the watch.

What Buyers Should Do

Series 9 and older owners get the most compelling upgrade in years. Series 11 owners should wait for reviews — the design is unchanged, and the Readiness app may come to older models via watchOS 27. Current-gen prices are already dropping: the Apple Watch Series 11 is $320 on Amazon. See our full smartwatch guide for all options.
